SSH Visit, Day 4: Our Lincoln Adventure.
Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 09:35AM Sadly, the visit with S., S., and H. went by very quickly. And, this being D.C. and all, there was so much left to see and do! So, our final day had to be planned carefully. I wanted my visitors to see something memorable, but I also wanted them to rest up before their travel day home. So, while we enjoyed donuts compliments of S., S., and H . . .
. . . We decided, then, that we would enjoy an afternoon at the pool, followed by lunch, playtime, and a dinner (S. - I can't recall what we did for dinner! Can you?!)
. . . and followed by a trip to the beautiful, memorable Lincoln Memorial, which would be preceded by a metro ride to Arlington Cemetery and a beautiful walk across the Memorial Bridge from Virginia into the District of Columbia.
The night was beautiful. BEAUTIFUL! Low humidity, perfect temperature, and a beautiful sky as we crossed the Potomac to enjoy some concessions and our ultimate destination, that giant, imposing, amazing statue of Abraham Lincoln. (visitors be forewarned: the Reflecting Pool is under construction. It isn't the pretty sight you might expect. Also, in the first picture, I spy S. & H. Do you?!)
That part of the evening was lovely, lovely. Then . . . then there was the trip home. Oh, man. Not fun, but definitely memorable. There was the mile-long walk to the metro station with some very tired kiddos. Then, there was the nearly 20-minute wait for the after-9PM train. After that, the pratically 30-minute stop at Reagan National Airport because trains were sharing a track, during which time a way-overtired A. started crying hysterically and beyond loudly. Add to that, another wait just inches away from our stop. Plus, a very crowded elevator ride away from the train platform, and some stingy metro farecards that. Just. Wouldn't. WORK! All good things - including trips - must come to - a sometimes totally wacky and tiring - end. But I wouldn't have this trip any other way. It was fun and wonderful. Thank you, S., S., and H. for visiting and taking good care of us! Not work on your list of D.C. sites that are left to be seen, you hear?!
